Mostly this week I just want to flag a couple of movies … movies that might lift your spirits as much as they did mine. Both are still in theatres.
So do yourself a favour and treat yourself to the movies this week.
The first one is Project Hail Mary, with Ryan Gosling. It’s long … over two and a half hours. But it’s worth it for the laughs, the sense of awe at the sheer wonder of the cinematography on the big screen. Based on the best selling 2021 book of the same name by Andy Weir, the movie scores an impressive 97% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Here’s the trailer:

And I am sure you can find many clips online. Here is a well written review which gives a great overview:

The second movie I want to recommend, also in theatres now, is I Swear, a 2025 British biographical comedy-drama. It is based on the true life story of John Davidson, a Scottish man with severe Tourette syndrome who was the subject of the 1989 television documentary John’s Not Mad.
Here’s the trailer, but warning … the language is very salty (because it is true to John Davidson’s life story).

And a review from The Guardian: https://share.google/HSQ8zOFjN220J0DwY
Again, there’s lots online about the real John Davidson, which I find fascinating. The movie is at the same time heartbreaking, funny, uplifting and inspirational. And, I learned a lot about Tourette Syndrome.
Both movies left me feeling inspired and hopeful. Which quite honestly are characteristics that are often hard to find these days.
Perhaps they will find their way into a sermon or two in the next couple of months.
Happy watching.
blessings,
Martha
